We have been blessed to spend a lot of time on the water enjoying our favorite hobby, boating. There is one thing we would have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to miss; where it really counted there was one outboard motor that was more trusted than any other, the Yamaha. When we went to Isla Mujeres, Mexico (Women's Island) it was the only outboard engine we saw being used. Every boat had one on it, so we asked the natives why that was? My Cuban origin helped me get their full prospective, and the answer was that Yamaha was the only option to them the only engine that could be trusted when their lively-hood depended on it.

We were so intrigued seeing hundreds of old beat up fishing boats with handsome Yamaha outboard motors on the back. Our next stop was Cozumel, Mexico. Having already picked up on the Yamaha craze it was easy to notice that things were the same there, Yamaha's were again being called the best outboard motor.

Over the next 10 years we visited many other boat towns such as, the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, Palm Beach, etc. It seemed like more of the same, the Yamaha was the engine of choice with the locals. My husband being from The Ocean State (Rhode Island), has also brought my travels to the north-east. When offered a free fishing trip with a friend of a friend, we gladly accepted. It would turn out that we could not have lucked out with a better guide. After we had over seventy pounds of striped bass in the boat in just two hours, it was time to head in and relax. On the way in, I couldn't help mentioning the engine pushing us, another trusty old Yamaha.

Anyone with basic tools and basic carpentry skills will be able to assemble this simple design in an afternoon. The plan has enough flexibility so that you may make adjustments accordingly. Measurements provided are a benchmark and may be altered to suit individual needs.

Tools required are basic. A hand saw and circular saw will do the cutting. A drill with assorted bits, open ended wrenches or a socket set, and a hammer for good measure. The materials list is short. For lumber, 2"x"4"s and 2"x10"s. Lag bolts with washers as indicated, and exterior deck screws. Do not use drywall screws! They have limited shear strength and will most likely fail somewhere down the road. Four industrial casters and lag bolts may be an option should you decide to make your stand mobile.

To begin create a materials list and prepare the lumber. Keep in mind these dimensions should reflect your needs; this is only a rough guide. Cut two pieces of 2"x4" into 3' lengths for the upright supports. Prepare two more at the same length to serve as the base or "feet" of the stand. Now, cut three 2"x10" pieces, each 24" in length. One will serve as a false transom, the remaining two will complete the base and accept casters should you decide to include them. Cut one 2"x4" also at 24". Measuring roughly half way down both uprights, drill two pilot holes on either end of the 24", 2"x4" and fasten parallel to the transom. This will aid in reinforcing the stand.

Finally, place the stand on its side and fasten the remaining 24", 2"x10" peices underneith the base, front and back with deck screws. Remember to pre drill. As an option you may decide to ad four commercial grade casters to your stand. If so, thru bolt with lags using the 2"x10"s as an attachment point. If your motor is above eight horsepower, create angle braces on either side of the stand using 2"x4"s. Toenail these to the base pieces using deck screws, and screw or thru bolt them with lags onto the uprights.

How to Install a Wedge on an Outboard Motor

Under normal conditions a boat’s engine, or outboard motor, rests against the transom with little need for adjustment. However, in a situation where due to design defect, or otherwise, the back of the boat cannot seem to clear the water sufficiently, thereby resulting in takeoffs where the boat’s fore part tilts heavily skywards, the angle needs to be fixed to allow the boat to adjust and counterbalance against the weight put upon it and the natural need for forward momentum. In short, a pair of transom wedges may be called for.

Before arriving at the critical action; the how to install a wedge on an outboard motor part, it is necessary to garner some supplies. An engine hoist is crucial. Then there is hardware, specifically a pair of matching bolts and locknuts, as well as a 19mm regular and deep socket wrench and a 13mm socket wrench. The bolts with matching locknuts need to be ½ x 4 ½ and stainless. Rounding off the list is sealing agent, a razor, acetone and a good pair of rubber gloves.

Part of preparation is adhering to safety measure. To ensure the boat’s power is off it is best to remove the fuel line, as well as a good idea to use the 13mm socket wrench already on hand to remove the negative ground cable.

Remove the engine cover and find a metal loop located at the top of the engine. The loop is for fastening the hoist. With the engine hoisted remove the bolts. For the top two bolts, use the deep socket wrench on the outside upper lock nut, the ordinary wrench on the inside lock nut. A partner to hold the bolt from inside could prove useful for the second pair of bolts. However, if this is not possible a deep socket wrench shoved into place on the bolt should suffice.

If, once the aforementioned nuts are removed, it becomes obvious the engine was mounted using the lowest possible mounting holes, sliding the engine forward will be impossible. In which case, it will be necessary to take off the bolts for the upper mounts as well.

With the engine hoisted aside there is sure to prove some residue visible. This is where the acetone, razor and gloves come in handy. Once the area is free of old residue it is time to apply fresh adhesive to the hose ready and waiting fresh bolts. Marine adhesive 3M 5200 is designed for transoms and should do the required work well. It is important to spread the sealing agent liberally both at the ends and sides of the bolts.

Once the bolts are in place, hang the wedges with the wider portion south. Replace the engine by hanging it on the two top bolts. Apply sealing agent to the lower bolts. Push them through, ascertaining that the wedges are where they should be. Tighten everything up. This is a motor I had on my 16 ft boat. I had it on for one season and it ran great. I took it off for the season and stored the boat which got hit by a tornado in another location. I marked it as Pick up only but will ship freight at buyers cost or meet with in reason and buyer pay fuel cost.

This vintage boat motor is all original. It runs good. I use it on a 14 ft jon boat and it pushes it well. I will gladly send more pictures on request. The model # is 461-104043. I am not 100% sure that it is a Scott-Atwater brand motor. I am unfamiliar with this brand but the model # appears to be a Scott-Atwater brand. All the knobs are on the motor. There are no missing parts that I know of. I will ship anywhere in the U.S.A.  Please ask questions

Up for auction is a vintage, I believe to be 1950's-60's, Evinrude outboard motor stand. This stand is colapsable and folds down flat when not in use. This stand is in very good shape for it's age with just some minor scratches and rust, as seen in the pictures. 1950 Mercury KG4-H Racing Outboard.  Has great compression, open exhaust, H tower, 1:1 lower unit with factory black paint, 2 blade bronze propeller.  Engine comes with gas tank/recoil and new fuel line. I have not used the motor it has been in my collection for many years.  Very hard to find motors. There are no cracks, welds, or repairs on the tower or lower unit. Serial # 447674Power Head and exhaust will be removed for packaging.

This is a nice and clean running Evinrude Lightwin outboard that has fantastic spark and compression  ,,I used this motor as my troller for many years , but has been sitting for about 2 years ,, The tank has a dent were the gas cap is but does'nt leak , this is how I bought it  other wise all is very nice with the hard to find 20" long shaft   ,,,, nice and clean collector motor
