To start an outboard motor, the first thing you must do is tilt the motor back, next open the tank vent. Move the lever to the neutral position, set your choke between the half and full mark. Put the throttle in the start position, prime the fuel system, press the starter button or if you don't have an electric starter, pull the start chord. Reduce the choke and throttle after the motor starts.
Don't press the electric starter for more than a few seconds at a time. If your motor doesn't start after three tries, you should try adjusting the choke. If your motor has a kill switch, be sure it's in place, or your motor won't start at all.
If you do all of the above and your motor still won't start, you may have to do some trouble shooting. First you can turn the motor on and be sure that the propeller is spinning. If it is not, the problem may be your shear pin. Another thing you can do is check your spark plugs for damage. Squeeze the fuel pump primer and see if you feel any blockages. These are all some relatively common issues that can occur with an outboard motor.
It is a good idea to have your outboard motor checked over by a mechanic at the start of each season, this way you will be sure the spark plugs and seals are good, the pressure is right and all the parts are working correctly. This could save you a lot of frustration later. Another maintenance tip is to be sure to flush out your engine after each use. Lastly use new fuel; you should not use fuel that you have had for over a couple of months. These tips and steps should help you keep your outboard motor running well and keep you out on the water having fun.
