Honda Outboard Motors – Perfect For Your Boat

Honda Outboard Motors

Perfect For Your Boat

The world of boating is not only way of life but also a favorite past time. Honda outboard motors offer a little bit of something for everyone. No matter the size of boat, there is a model available for all applications.

Portable 2hp and 5hp engines are perfect for canoes, aluminum boats, and sailboats. For larger aluminum boats, sailboats and inflatable devices, the 8, 9.9,15 and 20 horsepower engines are recommended, as they offer the power thrust system which provides additional power. The extra power creates better handling and control options.

The 25hp and 30hp models use a 3to3 induction system which improves the overall engine response. The 40hp, 50hp and 60hp models use the blast technology that provides the motor with plenty of power. The 60hp thrust model uses a unique gear case and large propellers to provide additional power. The 75hp and 90hp engines are equipped with programmed fuel injection and VTEC technologies.

Designed with a low speed torque system, the 115hp model improves acceleration at low speeds. The 135hp and 150hp models incorporate the variable valve timing and lift electronic control technology. The 200hp and 250hp models are both designed with large displacement V6 technology and incorporate a lean burn control that allows the engine to use less fuel during cruising speeds.

The VTEC technology provides the engine with substantial power and fuel economy features for larger boats. The 65hp model offers programmed fuel injection, this method delivers the precise amount of fuel/air mixture to each cylinder. This allows the motor to start easily every time and provides great fuel efficiency with a responsive throttle.

The 105hp model comes standard with the VTEC technology and also uses a duel stage induction system. The dual stage induction system optimizes air flow to match the engine speed. The end result is maximum combustion efficiency, increased torque, and increased fuel efficiency. The four Honda outboard engines available, offer something for every boater, no matter the area where it is being used or the size of the craft.

Johnson Outboard Motors – Providing Performance

Johnson Outboard Motors

Providing Performance That Is Steeped In History

In the early twentieth century, four brothers from Terre Haute, Indiana created a boat motor. They were trying to power their boat to a favorite place they often frequented, a walnut rich expanse on a beautiful river. From that one simple need, a yearning based on desire for something they loved, an boat motor company was born. Johnson outboard motors were the result.

With that same thinking in mind, Lou, Harry, Julius and Clarence also created a plane engine which resulted in a monoplane flight in the early years of American aviation. These brother's intelligence and business savvy complemented each other and is often referred to as the key to the current company's foundation.

The company produced the first heavy outboard motor beginning in 1926. In an effort to place their product in easy reach of a vast testing environment, the brothers also created the industry's finest example of a manufacturing plant for these products on the river they loved.

Companies change hands over the span of almost one hundred years and this one is no different. Its current owner, a Canadian business, is a large manufacturer of recreational watercraft.

The company also has a long lasting name to live up to when it brands its products with the Johnson name. Proof can be seen in the company's current growth and success during even difficult times in its and nation's history. Competitors are desperately trying to copy their model of success.

The Johnson 25 horse power and 9.9 are are among the most popular and best performing models on the market today. Other than those two engines, the company also offers a wide variety of others.

Long ago four brothers created an engine based on a simple need to gratify themselves with small gifts of nature. Today that company and the name of the brothers live on. Testimony that when something is done, even one for simple reasons, it is in the best interest to do the best job possible.

How to Install a Wedge on an Outboard Motor

How to Install a Wedge on an Outboard Motor

Under normal conditions a boat’s engine, or outboard motor, rests against the transom with little need for adjustment. However, in a situation where due to design defect, or otherwise, the back of the boat cannot seem to clear the water sufficiently, thereby resulting in takeoffs where the boat’s fore part tilts heavily skywards, the angle needs to be fixed to allow the boat to adjust and counterbalance against the weight put upon it and the natural need for forward momentum. In short, a pair of transom wedges may be called for.

Before arriving at the critical action; the how to install a wedge on an outboard motor part, it is necessary to garner some supplies. An engine hoist is crucial. Then there is hardware, specifically a pair of matching bolts and locknuts, as well as a 19mm regular and deep socket wrench and a 13mm socket wrench. The bolts with matching locknuts need to be ½ x 4 ½ and stainless. Rounding off the list is sealing agent, a razor, acetone and a good pair of rubber gloves.

Part of preparation is adhering to safety measure. To ensure the boat’s power is off it is best to remove the fuel line, as well as a good idea to use the 13mm socket wrench already on hand to remove the negative ground cable.

Remove the engine cover and find a metal loop located at the top of the engine. The loop is for fastening the hoist. Next step is to find the pair of four bolts and nuts that must be removed from the engine prior to installing the wedges. There will be two at the top, two within the stern section of the cabin.

With the engine hoisted remove the bolts. For the top two bolts, use the deep socket wrench on the outside upper lock nut, the ordinary wrench on the inside lock nut. A partner to hold the bolt from inside could prove useful for the second pair of bolts. However, if this is not possible a deep socket wrench shoved into place on the bolt should suffice.

If, once the aforementioned nuts are removed, it becomes obvious the engine was mounted using the lowest possible mounting holes, sliding the engine forward will be impossible. In which case, it will be necessary to take off the bolts for the upper mounts as well.

With the engine hoisted aside there is sure to prove some residue visible. This is where the acetone, razor and gloves come in handy. Once the area is free of old residue it is time to apply fresh adhesive to the hose ready and waiting fresh bolts. Marine adhesive 3M 5200 is designed for transoms and should do the required work well. It is important to spread the sealing agent liberally both at the ends and sides of the bolts.

Once the bolts are in place, hang the wedges with the wider portion south. Replace the engine by hanging it on the two top bolts. Apply sealing agent to the lower bolts. Push them through, ascertaining that the wedges are where they should be. Tighten everything up. Remove the hoist and clean up and the job is finished; how to install a wedge on an outboard motor accomplished.

How to Install a Outboard Motor On A Boat

How to Install a Outboard Motor On A Boat

Install991876527_6f9ffd186e_zHow to install an outboard motor on a boat? This can really actually be quite a simple task to accomplish, and most will be surprised how little effort it really takes to get this done. This is generally known as quite a simple task that involves virtually no tools, or any kind of special knowledge or skills to complete. If the motor is small enough this feat can be done in just a matter of minutes all alone. If your motor is much bigger, than the most difficult part of the whole operation is going to be lifting the motor up onto the boats transom. When starting the installation, making sure the boat has the correct amount of horsepower to fit correctly with the size of your boat.

After that it needs to be determined whether the mounts will be able to sit the motor beneath the water line properly. Start installation by turning the clamps that are on the mounting clamp bracket so that they are all the way open before lifting of the motor begins. Doing this will allow for the least effort when putting the motor on the transom and avoiding a struggle to balance the heavy motor while the clamps are turned loose. It is extremely important to make certain the boat is on a balanced and solid surface.

Now it is certainly possible to get the motor installed even if the boat is in the water, but this opens up the risk of the boat accidently drifting away and the motor possibly falling in the water. The motor if large will now need to be lifted, it is best to have another person help if the motor is a decent size. Next the mounting clamp bracket will need to be aligned over the boats transom. After that, make certain the mounting clamp bracket sits the whole way down onto the transom. The motor will need to be aligned so it is centered laterally to allow for the absolute best steering.

Next the motor clamps will need to be tightened uniformly, cranking one first, than the next. Switch off between them rotating until they cannot get any tighter. Next the motor mount clamps need to be inspected for a round hole located in the clamps. Some have them; some don’t, but if there is one, insert a long shanked padlock that connects the motor mount clamps to make it so they can’t be turned anymore.

Doing this will help to prevent theft while ensuring the motor mount clamps will never come loose. Next the gas can needs to be connected to the motor, then squeeze the fuel fitting that is located at the end of the gas line then insert it through the fitting found on the front of the motor. Next release the fuel fitting. So if the question of how to install a outboard motor on a boat ever comes to mind, this is the simplest most effective method to get the job done.

Building a Wooden Outboard Motor Stand

Building a Wooden Outboard Motor Stand

Outboard Stand824765862_9583c5a063_zAny boater reading this understands the importance of a warm and dry work area to store and maintain your outboard motor. A sturdy wood outboard stand is essential to keep your outboard safe and secure.

Anyone with basic tools and basic carpentry skills will be able to assemble this simple design in an afternoon. The plan has enough flexibility so that you may make adjustments accordingly. Measurements provided are a benchmark and may be altered to suit individual needs.

Tools required are basic. A hand saw and circular saw will do the cutting. A drill with assorted bits, open ended wrenches or a socket set, and a hammer for good measure. The materials list is short. For lumber, 2"x"4"s and 2"x10"s. Lag bolts with washers as indicated, and exterior deck screws. Do not use drywall screws! They have limited shear strength and will most likely fail somewhere down the road. Four industrial casters and lag bolts may be an option should you decide to make your stand mobile.

To begin create a materials list and prepare the lumber. Keep in mind these dimensions should reflect your needs; this is only a rough guide. Cut two pieces of 2"x4" into 3' lengths for the upright supports. Prepare two more at the same length to serve as the base or "feet" of the stand. Now, cut three 2"x10" pieces, each 24" in length. One will serve as a false transom, the remaining two will complete the base and accept casters should you decide to include them. Cut one 2"x4" also at 24". This will assist in stabilizing the stand below the false transom.

To assemble, start by cutting two rabbet joints, one in each of the uprights to accept the 2"x10" transom. Simply notch out on one end of each 2"x4", using the profile dimension of the 2"x10". Next, create two "T" shapes using the uprights and the base pieces. Find the center of the 2"x4" base sections. Place each upright perpendicular to these pieces, drill and thru bolt with two lags and washers for each assembly. Keep in mind the uprights should be outboard in relation to the base sections and remember to keep the rabbets correctly opposite one another as to accept the 2"x10". Use a square to assure a true 90 degree angle before tightening the lags. Stand both sections up spaced 2' apart and rest the transom into the rabbet joints. Drill and thru bolt with two lags and washers on either side. You have now joined the two sides of the stand. Measuring roughly half way down both uprights, drill two pilot holes on either end of the 24", 2"x4" and fasten parallel to the transom. This will aid in reinforcing the stand.

Finally, place the stand on its side and fasten the remaining 24", 2"x10" peices underneith the base, front and back with deck screws. Remember to pre drill. As an option you may decide to ad four commercial grade casters to your stand. If so, thru bolt with lags using the 2"x10"s as an attachment point. If your motor is above eight horsepower, create angle braces on either side of the stand using 2"x4"s. Toenail these to the base pieces using deck screws, and screw or thru bolt them with lags onto the uprights.
