Living in south Florida my whole life has given me, and my husband, an opportunity to travel the Caribbean and visit lots of boat towns. We have been blessed to spend a lot of time on the water enjoying our favorite hobby, boating. There is one thing we would have to be deaf, dumb, and blind to miss; where it really counted there was one outboard motor that was more trusted than any other, the Yamaha. When we went to Isla Mujeres, Mexico (Women's Island) it was the only outboard engine we saw being used. Every boat had one on it, so we asked the natives why that was? My Cuban origin helped me get their full prospective, and the answer was that Yamaha was the only option to them the only engine that could be trusted when their lively-hood depended on it.

We were so intrigued seeing hundreds of old beat up fishing boats with handsome Yamaha outboard motors on the back. Our next stop was Cozumel, Mexico. Having already picked up on the Yamaha craze it was easy to notice that things were the same there, Yamaha's were again being called the best outboard motor.

Over the next 10 years we visited many other boat towns such as, the Florida Keys, the Bahamas, Palm Beach, etc. It seemed like more of the same, the Yamaha was the engine of choice with the locals. My husband being from The Ocean State (Rhode Island), has also brought my travels to the north-east. When offered a free fishing trip with a friend of a friend, we gladly accepted. It would turn out that we could not have lucked out with a better guide. After we had over seventy pounds of striped bass in the boat in just two hours, it was time to head in and relax. On the way in, I couldn't help mentioning the engine pushing us, another trusty old Yamaha.

If there is a problem with the engine not running, you always start out with seeing if fuel is getting to the carburetor. If it is getting into the carburetor, is it exiting the carburetor? The most common problem with engines when they are carbureted is that the float is stuck or build up of deposits are clogging ports. When you have a problem like this, it is good to remove and overhaul the carb. You must take the carburetor apart and buy a kit which will have a new float, float pin, and gaskets. After removing all of the components, soak the housing in parts cleaner for 24 hours.

A carburetor kit can cost up to 50 dollars. The minimum is 30 dollars. If this is not the problem, you must see if the spark plugs are getting fire. You can remove the plug and hook the plug to the plug wire. Slowly turn over the engine. If you see a spark at the bottom of the plug, you are getting fire. One thing that is always good to check is the fuel pump if it is equipped with one.

Remove the fuel line from one end of the pump. Turn the engine over slowly and see if fuel shoots out of the pump strongly. If fuel does not come out, the pump may be bad. Check out the fuel filter and see if it is clogged. You can remove the filter and blow through it. If you cannot blow through it, it is clogged.

Check the fuel itself. Poor some fuel in a class jar. You should wait five to ten minutes and if you see a line form in the jar, you have water in the fuel. Water sinks to the bottom. That will be the first thing that enters the carburetor. Also check to air filter too the carburetor. Replace if filter is dirty. If it is a sponge filter, wash the filter in soap water.
