Founded in 1907 by Ole Evinrude, Evinrude motors has spent a century earning a reputation as one of the most reliable American outboard manufacturers.
Amazingly, even with the technological advances that have been made in the last century, the basic concept of the outboard as envisioned by Ole Evinrude is still reflected by the latest products. A set of bevel gears, vertical crankshafts, and horizontal flywheels are featured in virtually all outboard motors.
Like so many great inventions, the first Evinrude outboard motor was inspired by a random event. On a picnic a couple of miles from shore, Ole and a friend suddenly had the urge for ice cream. Volunteering to make an ice cream run, Ole rowed to shore, bought the cool treat and rowed back only to discover that the ice cream had melted into a puddle. Determination to come up with a more efficient way of propelling a small boat than the traditional oar, Ole proceeded to research and design the motor that would revolutionize the world of small watercraft by extending the effective range of these vehicles. At least that's how the story goes...
Selling the company in 1913 to take care of his ill wife, Ole agreed not to compete in the outboard motor market for a period of 5 years. When that time had elapsed, he started another company with a new and improved version of his motor. The new company was as successful as the initial company. Eventually an agreement was reached and the two companies merged with Ole as president.
After the Ole's death, his son took over the helm of the company. In a bold 1936 move, the company merged with Johnson Motor company and proceeded to dominate the recreational boating motor world as well as delve into arenas as diverse as car racing and military applications.
The Evinrude Outboard Motors story is a testament to the success that innovation and determination can bring. Ole's legacy lives on in both the products still being manufactured and the Ole Evinrude Award that the New York Boat Show annually presents to recognize an extraordinary contribution to the world of recreational boating.
