There is no wide market for antique outboard motors. While an outboard motor that survives over twenty years is a rare find for most people. The old engines can get left behind in a garage, a shed, or even a basement. When people clean up these areas, they are often reluctant to throw away Grandpa's old fishing companion. Indeed, old outboard motors in working condition are useful even if they are not antiques.
Other people stumble upon antique outboard motors thinking they have made a rare find that can net them extra cash. While some people will buy the motors for parts and to fix them up, there is not a huge market for outdated small engine equipment. Manufacturers may not make the parts for engines that are more than 20 years old. If the parts do exist, a person has to hunt them down or machine them by himself.
Restoring antique outboard motors can be a rich and deeply fulfilling hobby, especially for people who work with their hands. As rewarding as it may be, it is not a good way to make money. The man hours spent to put a motor in working condition will not equal the selling price, even if a person charges minimal labor costs.
A person who stumbles upon an antique outboard motor in working condition may indeed be able to turn a profit, but a consumer should not expect this to happen on auction, flea market and yard sale finds. It does happen occasionally, but not enough for a person to make a living off of it.
