Vintage outboard motors are hard to describe. Vintage is a tag often used by E-bay sellers to attract people to the auction of certain items, but what the sellers mean by this is anyone guess. In general, referring to something as vintage means it's an old item with some degree of collectability. Vintage cars, vintage motorcycle and vintage dolls are sold by the hundreds everyday on online auction sites.
The usage is much the same when it comes to an outboard motor. A vintage outboard motor is not worth much more than a used outboard motor. If the item is in good repair and relatively recent, the owner may get a few good years out of it if he puts it on the back of his boat. For some people, this is the ideal use of a vintage outboard motor. Other people are willing to hold onto the items for a little while longer.
Antique outboard motors do not sell for much more than their vintage counterparts. There is not a large market for either vintage outboard motors nor the slightly older antiques, but an antique in working condition can fetch slightly more simply because it is older.
Unless a buyer has a good idea of what he is doing, it's probably a good idea to wait a few years to see if that vintage outboard motor is still around to become an antique. A person who enjoys restoring engines should not be deterred by this advice. Vintage motors are not any more difficult to repair than their older counterparts. The only exception is when the manufacturer still makes parts for the engine.
